Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. was an African American Tennis great who won three (3) Grand Slam Titles during the height of his career. He is fondly remembered for his efforts to promote social causes.
He won the 1968 US Open, 1970 Australian Open and the 1975 Wimbledon, where he defeated the then World No. 1 tennis player Jimmy Connors - in what perhaps is the greatest upset in tennis history. Jack Kramer, a tennis superstar and long time promoter of the sport, ranked Arthur Ashe among the 21 best tennis players of all time.
At the age of 49, Ashe died from AIDS complications on February 6, 1993.
