2003 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year
(Stats as of April 13, 2009)
Ben Clifford Curtis is a professional golfer who gained considerable recognition by winning the 2003 British Open at the Royal St. George's Golf Club. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 26, 1977.
With brilliant golfers Vijay Singh and Thomas Bjørn just a stroke behind his -1 par, Curtis' 2003 Open Championship victory was considered a major upset. The 2003 British Open was also Curtis' first appearance on the PGA Tour, and he became the first golfer to win in his major championship debut since Francis Ouimet at the 1913 U.S. Open.
From 396th, Curtis was catapulted to 35th in the Official World Golf Rankings after the upset victory, the highest jump made by any golfer in PGA history. He was named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for 2003.
