Byron Anton Leftwich is a professional football player currently signed as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He was born in Washington, D.C on January 14, 1980.
Leftwich was the 7th overall pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2003 NFL Draft. His first four seasons in Jacksonville were a mixture of successes and shortcomings. Although he contributed significantly in the early stages of his 4-year tenure, his chronic injury problems and inconsistent performances led him to be cut on September 1, 2007.
Leftwich joined the Atlanta Falcons on September 18, 2007 as a backup QB to Joey Harrington. He started in Week 5 of the 2007 NFL season and played well until Week 7, when he got injured. He was unavailable until Week 11. On February 15, 2008, he was released by Atlanta.
Leftwich agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 10, 2008, reportedly worth $645,000 plus a $40,000 signing bonus. He started the 2008 NFL season as a backup QB to Ben Roethlisberger, and contributed that season with 21 passes for 303 yards and 2 touchdowns, in addition to 1 rushing touchdown. He earned a Super Bowl ring when his team defeated the Arizona Cardinals during Super Bowl XLIII.
On April 12, 2009, Leftwich signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
