Cheryl Ford is a female professional basketball player currently signed with the Detroit Shock of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was born in Homer, Louisiana on June 6, 1981.
Cheryl and twin sister Daryl Ford are daughters of NBA legend Karl Malone.
Ford declared eligible for the 2003 WNBA Draft and was selected by the Detroit Shock as the 3rd overall pick. In just her rookie season, she helped convert a perennial loser team to championship contenders and helped the team win the 2003 WNBA Finals. For her role in the Shocks' post season campaign, she was awarded the WNBA Rookie of the Year. She became the only athlete to win both the WNBA championship and the WNBA Rookie of the Year award in the same year.
On July 22, 2008, Ford became embroiled in an altercation that involved several players of Detroit Shock and Los Angeles Sparks. This brawl became known as The Malice at the Palace II, the second brawl to occur at The Palace of Auburn Hills; the other being the notorious Pacers-Pistons brawl (see Ron Artest). The altercation resulted in Ford's season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
