 Mini Biography

Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was an American racing legend who once dominated the Winston Cup Series (now identified as the Sprint Cup Series). In life he was equally loved and reviled for his adroitness and ruthlessness; his death sparked an outcry that forced NASCAR to restructure the organization with an intensive focus on safety.

Earnhardt won 76 races and 7 Winston Cup Championships - which tied him with Richard Petty for most All-time. He is very popular by the nickname "The Intimidator" for his notoriety as a driver who would wreck you if he couldn't pass you. His other nicknames are "Ironhead", "Mr. Restrictor Plate", "The Man in Black" and "Darth Vader" for his black uniform and car.

Earnhardt, Sr. was born on April 29, 1951 and died on February 18, 2001, at the age of 49. The cause of his death was ruled as a basilar skull fracture acquired from a crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. He is succeeded by his son Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
