David Mark Eckstein (/ECK-styne/), nicknamed the "X-Factor", is a professional baseball player currently signed as a second baseman for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born in Sanford, Florida on January 20, 1975.
Eckstein was drafted in the 19th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 1997 MLB Amateur Draft. He was later signed off the waiver sheet by the Anaheim Angels on August 16, 2000 and made his Major League debut for the team on April 3, 2001. He was a member of the Anaheim Angels roster that won the 2002 World Series.
Eckstein was traded after the 2004 season to the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2005, he was voted to his first All-Star appearance, then again on 2006. He was also a member of the St. Louis Cardinals roster that won the 2006 World Series.
On December 13, 2007, Eckstein signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. With his expiring contract, on August 31, 2008, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. On January 15, 2009 he signed with the San Diego Padres a one-year contract on the condition that he play primarily second base.
Eckstein is distinguished for his size as he is uncommonly short for a professional sports player, at 5' 7". His size never deterred him from excelling in the league however, as he was able to rack up a number of awards, including being twice an All-Star selection, twice a World Series Champion, the 2006 World Series MVP, and the recipient of the 2006 Babe Ruth Award and the 2006 Holiday Inn Look Again Player of the Year.
