From 2005 to 2007, Lowrie had played for Boston at three different minor league levels. He played for the Portland Sea Dogs during the 2007 season and made it onto the Eastern League All-Star team. He was also named the Sea Dogs MVP and the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year. After that season, he was promoted to the Triple-A Pawtucket team.
Lowrie made his Major League debut for the Red Sox on April 15, 2008, replacing an injured Mike Lowell. He had three home runs in his debut, helping Boston to a 5-3 victory over Cleveland. During the 2008 ALDS, in Game 4 against Los Angeles, Lowrie singled in the bottom of the 9th inning, bringing in Jason Bay for the winning run.
