Jerome Abram Bettis, The Bus - is a retired American football halfback who played for Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 16, 1972.
Bettis is widely recognized as one of the best running backs ever due to his sheer power and amazing footwork. He ended his 13 NFL seasons as 5th on the NFL's All-Time Rushing list with 13,662 yards and 91 touchdowns. He also had 200 receptions for 1,449 yards with 3 touchdowns.
Bettis earned the famous sobriquet "The Bus" for his capacity to drag along multiple tacklers on his back during his power runs, like a bus. He was also given the nickname "Closer" by head coach Bill Cowher for his penchant to use Bettis to run out the clock whenever the Steelers were ready to close out the game, owing to Bettis' low fumbling percentage and resistance to tackles.
After the Super Bowl XL victory, Bettis announced his retirement by saying: "I'm a champion [now], and I think the Bus' last stop is here in Detroit". Incidentally, Detroit is also his hometown.
