Joseph Louis Barrow, or simply Joe Louis, is a legendary heavyweight boxer, referred to as the "Brown Bomber". He was born on May 13, 1914 in La Fayette, Alabama. He died on April 12, 1981, at the age of 66
Louis is widely considered to be one of the greatest boxers in history. In 2003, Ring Magazine's named him No. 1 in the 100 Greatest Punchers of All-Time List. In 2005, he was named as the 'Greatest Heavyweight Boxer of All-Time' by the International Boxing Research Organization. For more than 11 years (or over 106 months), he held the heavyweight boxing title and made 25 successful title defenses - a record which still stands today.
During the turbulent era of WWII, he became a national hero in America when he made the comment, "We're gonna win 'cause we're on God's side".
Louis wasn't able to financially capitalize on his success during his old age. He owed more than $1 million in taxes, so he worked at the Caesar's Palace Hotel in Las Vegas by welcoming tourists, in an effort to pay down his debt. He also had to rely on several of his closest friends for financial help, including crime boss Frank Lucas.
Joe Louis lives on in popular memory. Among other contributions, Louis coined two of boxing's most famous quotes: "He can run, but he can't hide" and "Everyone has a plan until they've been hit." In 1936, a beat writer for the Winnipeg Tribune used Joe Louis's nickname to refer to the Winnipeg Football Club after a game. From that point, the team became known popularly as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
