José Ariel Contreras Camejo is a Cuban professional baseball player who is currently a free agent. He was born in Las Martinas, Pinar del Río, Cuba on December 6, 1971.
In March 1999, while pitching for the Cuban National Team against the Baltimore Orioles, Camejo threw 8 shutout innings and struck out 10 batters, capturing the attention of talent scouts.
In 2002, Camejo defected from Cuba while still pitching for the National Team during the Americas Series. He was able to negotiate a four year contract with the Yankees organization on December 26, 2002. On March 31,2003, he made his MLB debut for the New York Yankees.
On July 31, 2004 Contreras was traded to the White Sox for pitcher Esteban Loaiza. He had his best season in 2005, when he started the season with five consecutive no-decisions and an ERA of 3.04. He helped the White Sox win the 2005 World Series in 4 games.
On August 31, 2009, Contreras was traded to the Colorado Rockies for minor league player Brandon Hynick and some cash.
