Michael William Hampton is a professional baseball pitcher currently signed with the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born in Brooksville, Florida on September 9, 1972.
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hampton was famous as one of the elite "slugging-pitchers" in the league. He had the Most Silver Slugger Awards by a Pitcher with 5, which he amassed from 1999 to 2003. He finished runner-up to Randy Johnson for the 1999 NL Cy Young Award. He was an MLB All-Star twice, in 1999 and in 2001.
However, when he signed with the Colorado Rockies on December 9, 2000 - in one of the most expensive contract signings in sports history, his form ironically began a major decline. Despite his huge contract, his contributions were mediocre as he was beset by injuries. On September 25, 2005, he underwent Tommy John surgery and had to spend the entire 2006 season in rehabilitation.
