Moses Eugene Malone is a former professional basketball player most noted for his successful years with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also recognized as one of the few athletes to earn distinctions in two separate basketball leagues: the NBA and the ABA.
Malone began his career when professional basketball was still split into two dominant leagues: the NBA and the ABA. He was signed straight out of high school by the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1974. Malone was purchased for $350,000 as the 5th pick by the Portland Trailblazers during the 1976 ABA Dispersal Draft (right after the ABA-NBA merger). He was traded shortly to the Buffalo Braves (now Los Angeles Clippers) who in turn traded him to the future Houston Rockets.
Malone immediately established himself as one of the league's best backboard specialist, particularly on the offensive end. In 1976, he set a new record for Offensive Rebounds Per Season with 437. He would break his own record two years later, with 587.
Although he logged his best statistics in Houston, Malone had his greatest years in Philadelphia, as a Sixer. In 1983, Malone and the Sixers took the league by storm, winning 65 games and storming through the playoffs, capping the season with a four game sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1983 NBA Finals. When interviewed, head coach Billy Cunningham just said, "The difference from last year was Moses".
Malone retired after 19 seasons in the NBA. He retired as the Career Leader in Offensive Rebounds. His jersey number was retired by two teams: #24 with the Houston Rockets, and #2 with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Right after graduating from Petersburg High School, Malone signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Maryland.
However, Malone was drafted by the ABA's Utah Stars in 1974 and became the fifth basketball player to jump straight from high school into the professional leagues.
