Muhammad Ali is an American boxing legend, widely documented as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time.
Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. He changed his name to Muhammad Ali on February 26, 1964, after converting to Islam. In 1975 he converted to Sunni Islam and then to Sufism.
Ali was voted the 2nd greatest fighter in history by ESPN.com, behind only the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson. In another poll by ESPN in 2007, Ali was again 2nd on the greatest heavyweights list of all time, this time behind Joe Louis. In 1999, Ali was given the title "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and the BBC.
There is no consensus among boxing experts and historians as to who is the supreme fighter of all time. However, the public consensus is clear. The fact that Ali's career shone in an era called the Golden Age of Heavyweight Boxing, an era populated by legendary fighters like Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Floyd Patterson, and Ken Norton - leaves little doubt as to the greatest boxer of all time.
