 Mini Biography

Patrick Brian Burrell III, nicknamed "Pat the Bat", is a professional baseball player currently signed as a left fielder for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on October 10, 1976 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Burrell attended the University of Miami where he was the 1996 College World Series MVP and the recipient of the 1998 Golden Spikes Award. In the 1998 MLB draft, he was selected as first overall by the Philadelphia Phillies, making his Major League debut on May 24, 2000 for the Phillies.

Early in his MLB career, Burrell showed an inclination for slugging home runs against the New York Mets, earning him the sobriquet "Met Killer". He overtook superstar sluggers Chipper Jones and Barry Bonds and led all active players in home runs against the Mets in 2007. Burrell was with the Phillies when they won the 2008 World Series.

On January 5, 2009, Burrell signed a 2-year $16 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.
