Elkington was born on December 8, 1962 in Inverell, Australia and grew up in Wagga Wagga.

Elkington's most prestigious accolade was winning the 1995 PGA Championship at the Riviera Country Club. He tied for second together with fellow Australian Stuart Appleby and French golfer Thomas Levet in the 2002 Open Championship.

He finished tied for third at the 2003 Masters Tournament.
