Retief Goosen is a South African professional golfer who competes on both the European based PGA Tour and the US based PGA Tour. His most notable accomplishments includes winning the U.S. Open twice and staying within the top ten in the Official World Golf Rankings for more than 250 weeks since 2001.
Goosen was born on February 3, 1969 in Pietersburg, South Africa. An interesting incident happened early in his life - he was hit by lightning, which he could not recall afterwards - which his father took as a sign of good things to come.
Evidently, his father's prediction proved true. In 2001 Goosen gained international renown when he won the 2001 U.S. Open on a very tough Southern Hills Country Club course, with a one-stroke lead over Hall of Famer Hale Irwin and Mike Weir. He captured his second Major win at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in the 2004 U.S. Open, edging out Phil Mickelson by two strokes.
Goosen is known by several nicknames - "The Iceman" and "Unflappable" - for his exceptionally calm demeanor. His friends affectionately call him "The Goose", a derivative from his name. He is known to be close friends with Gary Player.
