Richard Berens is an American professional swimmer. He was born on April 21, 1988 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Berens attended college at the University of Texas where he competes for the Texas Longhorns.
In the 2008 Summer Olympics, Berens helped the United States men's swimming team, which included Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, and Peter Vanderkaay, win a Gold Medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, on a world record time of 6:58.56.
The team again competed in the 2009 World Championships. He helped win for the United States a Gold Medal each for the 4x100-meter freestyle and the 4x200-meter freestyle events.
Berens is currently a business major at the University of Texas, where he swims butterfly, freestyle, and medley for the Longhorns Swim Team. His mother, Leslie, played volleyball for Miami University and now she coaches the South Mecklenburg High School swim team.
