Racism

Eto'o has been the target of several racial abuse while playing in some away matches for Barcelona. In February 2005, in an away game against Real Zaragoza, home team supporters began making ape-like chants and tossing peanuts onto the pitch whenever Eto'o gained possession of the ball. The referee made no mention of the incident in his match report, commenting only that the behavior of the crowd was "normal". Two abusers were later identified to the police and given five-month sporting-event bans.

In 2006, again at Zaragoza's Romareda stadium the chorus of ape noises from the stands caused Eto'o attempting to walk off the pitch in protest. Video of the incident captured Eto'o mouthing "No más" ("No more"). Several of the players, including from Real Zaragosa convinced him to continue playing.

Due to the ongoing racism from La Liga crowds, Eto'o no longer brings his family to matches. He said-

"It is something that has affected me personally. I think players, leaders, and the media have to join forces so that no one feels looked down upon because of the color of their skin. At this moment in time I prefer my children don't go to football matches. In the stands they have to listen to things that are difficult to explain to a child. It is better they aren't exposed to it."
